How it actually works
Iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide arrive dissolved and invisible, which is why well water can look clear at the tap and leave orange stains an hour later — the moment it meets air, dissolved iron oxidises into visible particles.
Air injection treatment does that deliberately and in a controlled place. An oxidising chamber introduces air, converting dissolved iron and manganese into filterable solids and driving hydrogen sulfide out of solution. A media bed then catches the solids, and the system periodically backwashes them to drain.
Sizing depends entirely on concentrations, pH and flow rate. This is the one product category where a quote issued without a water test is not a quote, it is a guess.
Where this applies
Private wells, almost exclusively. Rotten-egg smell, orange or brown staining on fixtures and laundry, black specks from manganese, and metallic taste are the signals. In North Carolina these usually travel together because they come from the same geology, which is why a combined oxidation and filtration approach is standard rather than three separate units.
Where you don't need it
Municipal water. None of the public systems in our service area — Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Charlotte or Wilmington — deliver iron or hydrogen sulfide at levels needing treatment. If you are on city water and smelling sulfur, the cause is almost certainly your water heater's anode rod, and replacing a $40 part is the fix rather than a treatment system.

Common questions
- Why is my water clear at the tap but stains orange later?
- The iron is dissolved and invisible until it contacts air and oxidises. Air injection treatment does that oxidation intentionally, inside the system, so the resulting particles get filtered out instead of ending up on your fixtures.
- Will a water softener remove iron?
- Small amounts of dissolved ferrous iron, incidentally. Meaningful iron will foul the resin and shorten its life considerably. Dedicated iron treatment ahead of the softener is the correct sequence.
- Do I need a water test first?
- Yes, and it is not optional. Iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, pH and flow rate all determine media selection and sizing. Anyone quoting a well system without testing is guessing.
